MUSIC
The long-standing belief of the Presbyterian Church proclaims that "The Christian religion is a singing faith." The apostle Paul writes "sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to our God, and go on, singing and chanting to the Lord in your hearts." The corporate expressions of faith through choral and congregational music in our worship are characteristics of our worship tradition. As we seek to honor tradition, we also seek to incorporate elements of our own day. The music program in general is under the umbrella of the Worship Committee.
Westminster's choir, under the supervision of the director of music, Randy Terry, is composed of both volunteers and choral scholars who serve as section leaders and assist the music director in various ways. The choral scholar program is funded from donations outside of the regular budget and we need the support of members and friends to keep this program viable. A gift in any amount is appreciated. It has made a huge difference in the morale of the congregation and volunteer singers. Anyone high school age through adults may sing in the choir. Rehearsals are held on Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. in the choir room. In the summer the schedule may vary.
The choir offers a repertoire of sacred classics through contemporary Christian anthems, including familiar hymns arranged for choir and spirituals. We offer a service of Lessons & Carols to celebrate Christmas, and occasionally combine with other local choirs for a special event.
In addition to the choir, Alonda Crosslin has worked with our children, teaching them songs during Vacation Bible School and at other times which they present to the congregation occasionally.
A Westminster favorite is the monthly hymn-sing, which starts at 10:30 a.m. in the sanctuary on the last Sunday of every month. John & Paula Offutt and Bob Moody are the guiding forces behind this ministry to bring "old timey" songs to the congregation in a fun and relaxed way.
Westminster's Sanctuary is a popular choice for music groups looking for a performance venue due to its excellent acoustics. The sanctuary is graced by our pipe organ, built by W. Zimmer & Sons in 2001, and a 7' Yamaha Conservatory Grand piano, both of which are regularly played together and separately each week as we worship.
If you have questions about specific ministries mentioned here or ideas of ways to improve our programs your input is always welcome, simply contact the Director of Music, Randy Terry.
